The Maryville University softball team came up short against the visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. The Tritons took game one 10-1, and the Saints saw a lead slip away as UMSL rallied to win the second game 5-3.

The Tritons scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning. UMSL used five hits to push across two scores. The Saints were held to just one hit over the first three innings, and the Tritons scored in each of their next three at-bats. Maryville got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Shelby Steinkamp singled and stole two bases. Kelsey Kapitzke hit a sharp single through the right side of the UMSL infield as Steinkamp cruised home with the Saints run. Kapitzke moved into scoring position on a groundout but was stranded at second.

In the second game, it was the Saints who got off to a quick start. Steinkamp walked, stole second and then took third as the errant throw bounced into the outfield. Kapitzke lifted a long fly ball which could have been a homer but UMSL centerfielder Monica Strube reached over the fence to save a run as Steinkamp scored on the sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Saints lead.

The Tritons scored in the top of the third, but the Saints answered right back with two runs in the home half of the inning. Danni Wydra singled to lead off, and Molli Updegraff drew a walk. Steinkamp lashed a single back up the middle to load the bases. All the runners moved up a base on a wild pitch as Wydra’s run gave Maryville a 2-1 lead. Kapitzke then lofted her second consecutive sac fly to bring home Steinkamp again for a 3-1 Saints lead. UMSL earned one run back to cut its deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. The Saints tried to answer in their next at bat as they loaded the bases but were stymied and stranded three runners. In the top of the sixth, UMSL’s Shannon Beatty hit a two-run homer to put the Tritons ahead, and UMSL scored another tally in the top of the seventh to cap the comeback.

The Saints are now 9-27 overall, 4-18 in the GLVC. The Tritons improve to 20-18 overall, 8-12 in the league. Maryville is next in action Friday in a rematch against Drury in Springfield, Mo.
