Last week, Maryville softball split a home doubleheader against Drury. This time, the rematch was in Springfield, but the Panthers took both ends of a doubleheader taking game one 7-0 and an extra-inning 4-3 decision in game two.
The Panthers received all the offense they would need with four runs in the third inning. Meanwhile, the Maryville offense was held in check by Drury starting pitcher Monica Villarreal. The Saints did not register their first hit until the sixth inning when Celci Mueller drilled a single to right field. Danni Wydra put down a sac bunt to move Mueller into scoring position, but the Saints stranded her in scoring position. In the seventh, Sarah Graham and Kelsey Kapitzke picked up back-to-back singles, but Drury retired the final two batters to close out the game.
The Saints jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the top of the first. Shelby Steinkamp and Mueller singled to start the game. Graham followed with an RBI single for Maryville’s first run. Mueller scored on a wild pitch for an early 2-0 advantage. Drury tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but the Saints retook the lead with a tally in the fourth. Kapitzke launched a solo homer, her sixth roundtripper of the season, to put the Saints back on top 3-2. The Panthers again tied the game with a score in the fifth. The game moved to extra innings where Drury manufactured a run for the winner. Regina Norris walked to start the bottom of the eighth, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a passed ball. Betsey Toalson lofted a sac fly for the game-winning run.
The Saints slide to 9-29 overall, 4-20 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Panthers up their slate to 25-14, 14-10 in the league.
