Men's Basketball Topples No. 4 Bellarmine 69-64

History repeated itself. With the shot clock running down and the Saints holding a narrow lead, Armon Provo drained a 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in the game to help the Maryville men’s basketball team rally to defeat No. 4 Bellarmine 69-64. The victory was the first over a nationally-ranked team in Saints history. In the waning moments of the Saints win Thursday over McKendree, Provo hit a dramatic 3-pointer to boost the Saints to their first win of the week.
 
Vance Hall made two free throws to give Bellarmine a 62-60 lead with 3:50 to play in the game. Trae Pemberton drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Saints ahead, and Provo sank a trey to give Maryville a 66-64 edge with two minutes to go. The Knights cut their deficit in half when Jake Thelen scored in traffic for a 66-64 Maryville lead. Both teams committed turnovers on their next possessions to set up another dramatic finish for the Saints. From just to the right of the top of the key, Provo turned and sank a long 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left as Maryville snapped a 0-for-11 skid against ranked teams.
 
The Knights scored 12 of the first 14 points of the game to quickly jump on top. The Bellarmine lead grew to as much as 16 before the Saints rallied. They got as close as 34-28 before the Knights took a 40-28 lead at halftime. Maryville still trailed 47-33 with 17 minutes left to play before mounting a huge comeback with a 10-0 run. Gerald Shaw started the run with a layup, and Pemberton hit a triple. After Provo sank a shot from beyond the arc, Myles Jerrett scored inside as the Saints closed to 47-43 at the 13:38 mark. Bellarmine still led 57-52 before Provo and Pemberton scored in the lane to pull the Saints to within one. Asa Toney hit a long 3-pointer to put Maryville ahead 59-57. Hall answered with a 3-pointer of his own before Jerrett made one free throw to set up another dramatic 3-pointer by Provo.
 
Provo finished the game with 19 points as the Saints put five scorers in double figures. Pemberton and Jerrett both finished with 11 points, while Shaw and Toney had 10 points. Maryville shot 58.1 percent for the game, including 66.7 percent in the second half. Hall led the Knights with 18 points. The Saints win their second straight thriller to improve to 13-4 overall, 3-2 in the GLVC. The Knights fall to 10-2 overall, 2-2 in the league.
