The Maryville men’s basketball team scored 22 unanswered points and rallied for a stunning 59-54 win at William Jewell Thursday evening in Liberty, Mo. The victory was the third straight for the Saints who improved to 14-4 overall, 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Saints trailed 41-25 with 17:34 left in the game before embarking on a sparkling 22-0 run. Maryville’s defense kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for 10 minutes to surge into the lead.
Asa Toney started the amazing run with a layup, and
Trae Pemberton hit two free throws and a 3-pointer to cut the lead to single digits.
Armon Provo sank a jumper, and Pemberton scored inside.
Myles Jerrett drained a 3-pointer to pull the Saints to 41-39 at the 11:17 mark. Pemberton then hit a triple to give Maryville its first lead of the night 42-41 with 9:44 to go. Toney added a corner 3-pointer, and
Jamel Johnson ended the run with a layup for a 47-41 margin with 8:09 on the clock.
William Jewell finally scored at the 7:15 mark as the Saints defense held the Cardinals scoreless for 10 minutes and 19 seconds. During that span, WJC missed 16 straight shots. Maryville eventually took a 49-44 lead but the Cardinals scored six consecutive points to retake a 50-49 edge. Toney answered for the Saints with a trey and a 52-50 margin with 3:42 remaining, and his layup provided a 54-40 lead. William Jewell scored to close to 54-52 with 1:45 to play.
With 50 seconds remaining on the clock, Armon Provo converted both ends of a one-and-one for a 56-52 lead but the Cardinals answered 56-54. The Saints defense forced a miss, and Pemberton made two free throws to build a 58-54 cushion with 25 seconds to go. WJC missed a 3-pointer and Provo’s free throw with 12.1 ticks remaining sealed the comeback victory for the Saints.
Toney paced the Saints with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Pemberton added 12 points, while
Max Mischkulnig pulled down nine rebounds. Provo finished with five points, eight rebounds and six assists. The Maryville defense held William Jewell (6-7 overall, 2-3 in the GLVC) leading scorer Dillon Deck to just four points, 11 below his average.
The Saints, who have already surpssed last season's victory total of 13, are back in action Saturday in Kansas City as they play Rockhurst in a 3:15 p.m. contest.
