For the first time since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Maryville men’s basketball team has won four straight league games after escaping Rockhurst with a 62-57 victory Saturday afternoon in Kansas City. The Saints improve to 15-4 overall, 5-2 in the GLVC. The 15 wins are the most since the 2008-09 team also won 15 games.
In the second half, Rockhurst held a 42-39 lead with 13:48 left in the contest before the Saints charged in front.
Asa Toney hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game, and
Trae Pemberton scored on a layup for a 44-42 lead.
Gerald Shaw grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked the ball out to Toney who drained another trey for a 47-42 lead with 11:58 to go.
The Saints held a 49-45 margin before a 3-pointer by Toney and a bucket by
Jamel Johnson handed Maryville a 54-45 lead with 6:24 to play in the game. The Hawks chipped away the their deficit and pulled to within three at 56-53. Toney scored for the Saints, but Rockhurst answered with a layup at the 2:34 mark. Defense took over as neither team scored until the Hawks closed to 58-57 on a James Robinson steal and layup. Pemberton went to the line and hit two free throws with 16 seconds to play for a 60-57 lead. Maryville’s defense forced a contested 3-pointer and Johnson grabbed the key defensive rebound. He was fouled with 1.3 seconds left and sealed the victory with two free throws.
Toney led the Saints with 15 points and seven rebounds, while
Max Mischkulnig scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Shaw added 10 points and six rebounds. Brandon McCann led the Hawks (1-12, 0-6) with a game-high 20 points.
Maryville is next in action Thursday, Jan. 24, when Drury comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. game. The contest is Mania Night with a theme of “Rock of Ages,” and all fans are encouraged to come to the game dressed as their favorite rock star or group.
