Childs Leads Saints Rally Past Rockhurst

Down by eight in the first half, the Maryville Saints women’s basketball team rallied to post a 72-58 victory at Rockhurst Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo. The Saints drilled 10 3-pointers in the game to key the comeback.
 
Maryville trailed 20-12 with eight minutes left in the first half before storming back into the game. Shelby Miller hit two free throws, and Kate Childs followed with a 3-pointer to start the rally. After an RU bucket, Angela Pepowski made a basket and two free throws by Abby Duethman brought the Saints to within one point. Rockhurst pushed its lead back up to 26-21 until the Saints surged ahead for good. Pepowski scored inside, and a Kristin Fomon triple tied the game. Brittnye McSparron’s free throw put Maryville ahead 27-26. Brittany Fish drained a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer for a 30-26 Saints lead.
 
Early in the second half, a Miller trey pushed the Saints ahead by seven. Maryville still led 36-31 before taking control with a 10-2 run. Duethman scored on a layup, and Childs also scored in the lane. After the Hawks scored, Childs answered with a 3-pointer. McSparron had a free and a basket for a 46-33 lead with 12 minutes left to play in the game. Rockhurst made a bit of a comeback and trimmed the gap to seven, but the Saints replied with an 8-2 burst to stretch back to a 59-46 margin. The Saints led by as many as 16 points and cruised to improve to 8-7 overall, 4-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
 
Childs led the Saints with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Duethman notched a double-double in her hometown with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Miller finished with 13 points on three triples and a 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line. Kendall Hart’s 13 points and 10 rebounds led Rockhurst (3-10, 1-5 GLVC).
 
The Saints return home Thursday, Jan. 24, when they host Drury in a 5:15 game with Mania Night’s “Rock of Ages” theme.
