The Maryville men’s basketball team suffered through its worst shooting night of the season as its four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference winning streak ended. Drury blazed the nets at 52 percent as the Panthers posted a 78-37 win at Moloney Arena in a matchup of teams that entered the contest tied for the GLVC West Division lead.
On the first possession of the game,
Gerald Shaw threw down an emphatic dunk to energize the Saints home crowd. After Drury hit a three-pointer, Shaw came back and answered with his own trey for a 5-3 Saints lead. The Panthers surged ahead 11-7 until the Saints tallied six straight points.
Asa Toney started the burst with a trey, hit one free throw, and Shaw sank two free throws for a 13-11 Maryville lead. Drury sank back-to-back 3-pointers to retake the lead at 17-13. Toney’s bucket made the score 17-15 but the Panthers outscored Maryville 21-8 the rest of the half for a 38-23 lead at intermission.
The Panthers scored the first five points of the second half, but
Armon Provo’s 3-pointer left Maryville’s deficit at 43-26. The Saints offense struggled and Drury stayed hot as the Panthers slowly pulled away to hand the Saints their first home loss since Dec. 15, 2012.
Shaw led the Saints (15-5, 5-3) with 10 points but was the only Maryville player to reach double figures. The Saints managed just a 26.2 shooting percentage from the field, while the Panthers finished at 52.0 percent. Alex Hall topped Drury (12-4, 6-2 GLVC) with 15 points. The Saints welcome Missouri S&T to town Saturday in a 3:15 contest.
