Armon Provo tied a school record for shooting percentage in a game as he hit 88.9 percent (8-of-9) as the Maryville men’s basketball team bounced back to cruise past Missouri S&T 78-57 Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. Provo tied the mark first set by Ben Koopman Jan. 28, 2009, against Principia.
The Miners held an early 4-2 edge before the Saints tallied 13 unanswered points to surge ahead 16-4.
Trae Pemberton began the run with a layup and a 3-pointer.
Asa Toney added a triple, and
Armon Provo drained another from beyond the arc. Provo’s layup closed the burst for the 12-point lead seven minutes into the game. The Miners scored the end the Saints run but Maryville kept the lead.
Up 29-19, the Saints reeled off an 11-0 burst to take control.
Gerald Shaw started the run with a 3-pointer, and
Derek Deters hit two free throws and a trey.
Adam Whitlock hit a corner 3-pointer for a 40-21 lead.
Max Mischkulnig drilled the Saints’ eighth 3-pointer of the half as Maryville took a 47-23 lead at halftime. The Saints shot 66.7 percent (16-of-24) in the opening 20 minutes, including 61.5 percent from 3-point range.
The Miners had a four-point play to start the second half to get to 47-27 but Provo and Pemberton recorded consecutive 3-pointers. Maryville stretched its lead to as many as 34 points at 74-40 on a Deters 3-pointer with less than eight minutes to play and eased to the victory. The Saints defense forced the Miners into 26 turnovers as Maryville enjoyed a 37-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Saints hit a season-high 14 3-pointers as eight different players sank at least one trey. Provo finished with 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and added four assists. Deters was second on the team with 13, while Pemberton added 12 points. Jamel Johnson dished out a season-high six assists. Nasrath Khan led the Miners (5-11, 1-8) with 17 points, and Michael Jackson added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Saints finished the game shooting 52.3 percent from the field and hit 14-of-28 from 3-point range.
The Saints improve to 16-5, the most wins since the 2005-06 season, and are 6-3 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Thursday, Jan. 31, when Illinois Springfield visits for a 7:30 p.m. game.
