The Maryville men’s basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end as No. 9 Kentucky Wesleyan pulled away late in an 83-53 decision Thursday evening in Owensboro, Ky. The loss on the road was the first for the Saints in five true road games this season.
The Panthers took the early lead but the Saints pulled to within one when
Melvin Turner drained a 3-pointer at 10-9. Maryville was still only down 15-12 after two
Trae Pemberton free throws midway through the first half. The Panthers tallied six straight points before
Asa Toney stopped the run with two from the free-throw line. However, KWC tacked on a 7-0 run. Maryville received back-to-back buckets from
Gerald Shaw to close to 28-18 before the Panthers settled for a 33-18 lead at halftime.
The Panthers stretched their advantage to as much as 43-22 before the Saints slowly closed the gap. Turner rattled in a trey, and Pemberton scored on a layup to trim the deficit to 43-27. Maryville was still down by 16 but used an 8-3 burst to put pressure on the nationally-ranked Panthers. Pemberton drained a 3-pointer, and
Armon Provo scored in the lane. Later,
Darrin Young Jr.’s made a trey, and Toney rained in another 3-pointer to trim the lead to 52-42 with 10:15 remaining.
However, Kentucky Wesleyan scored the next 11 points to remain undefeated (9-0, 1-0 GLVC) on the season. Toney led the Saints (11-3, 1-1 GLVC) with 16 points and added five rebounds. Shaw finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Maryville struggled shooting from the field, finishing with a 34.7 mark, while the Panthers blazed the nets with a 51.9 percent field goal percentage. Dazmond Starke topped KWC with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds.
Maryville returns to action Saturday, Jan. 5, when it takes on No. 17 ranked Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind.
