The Maryville defense allowed Illinois Springfield to make just four field goals in the first half and posted a 70-52 victory over the Prairie Stars Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Moloney Arena. The victory is the seventh for the Saints in league play, the most since Maryville joined the GLVC.
The Saints scored the first six points of the game to grab a lead they would not surrender the rest of the way.
Asa Toney scored on a layup, and
Myles Jerrett added two free throws.
Armon Provo came up with a steal and cruised in for an easy layup and a 6-0 margin. The Prairie Stars did not score until the 14:47 mark. Maryville kept the lead and still enjoyed a 16-12 lead until going on a 9-2 run. Jerrett nailed a 3-pointer from the wing but UIS sank two free throws.
Trae Pemberton scored on a layup, stole the ball and fed Provo for a quick bucket.
Gerald Shaw scored to push the edge to 25-14. The lead stood at 25-16 until the Saints sank two triples to end the half by Shaw and Toney for a 31-16 lead at the break. The Maryville defense held the Prairie Stars to 18.2 percent shooting on 4-of-22 from the field.
The Saints cushion was 38-25 before the Saints sealed the win with an 18-2 run. Maryville nailed three 3-pointers during the run to stretch the edge to 55-27 on
Derek Deter’s three-point play with nine minutes to play. The Saints defense finished the game holding UIS to just 34 percent shooting on 17-of-50 from the Prairie Stars.
Shaw led the Saints with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Toney added 12 points, six assists and four rebounds, while Provo also chipped in with 12. Dusko Despot led the Prairie Stars (5-13, 3-7) with 11 points.
