Abby Duethman recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds as Maryville posted a 61-45 victory over visiting Illinois Springfield Thursday at Moloney Arena. The Saints held the Prairie Stars to just 18 points in the first half on 26.5 percent shooting to key the win.
The Prairie Stars scored the first four points of the game and still were up 9-8 before the Saints tallied seven consecutive points to surge ahead 15-9.
Brittany Fish drained a 3-pointer to start the run, and
Kate Childs had back-to-back layups. UIS cut the deficit to 15-14, but Maryville recorded another 7-0 run. Childs scored inside, and
Kayla Person had short jumper in the lane. Duethman completed a three-point play for a 22-14 lead. Just before halftime, Duethman drained a corner triple, and
Angela Pepowski powered for a layup and a 31-18 lead at the break.
UIS slowly chipped into the lead and got as close as 36-26 four minutes into the second half, but
Shelby Miller hit a 3-pointer, and Duethman swished two from the line. The Saints slowly pushed the lead back up to as many as 22 with six minutes left in the game and cruised to their fourth straight victory and improve to 11-7 overall, 7-3 in the GLVC.
Duethman hit 7-of-13 shots and six of her boards came on the offensive end. Childs added 10 points, while
Angela Pepowski came off the bench to tally eight points. Alyssa Palmer led UIS (5-13, 2-8) with 14 points, while Elizabeth Kelly hauled down 10 boards. The Saints defense held UIS to just 32.7 percent shooting, including 26.9 percent in the first half.
The Saints are next in action Saturday when they travel to Quincy for a 1 p.m. game.
