No. 17 Southern Indiana Downs Saints in Men's Hoops

No. 17 Southern Indiana recorded an 83-55 victory over Maryville in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s basketball game in Evansville, Ind., Saturday afternoon. The loss was the second straight for the Saints to a nationally-ranked team after falling to No. 9 Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday night.
 
The Screaming Eagles flew out to an 8-0 lead before Asa Toney scored on a layup as the Saints scored the next six points. Armon Provo scored on a layup, then had an offensive rebounds for a put back bucket as Maryville drew to 8-6. USI tallied seven consecutive point before Darrin Young Jr. stopped the run with a 3-pointer. The Screaming Eagles used a 6-0 run and eventually led by as many as 20 points. Maryville scored six straight points late on four free throws by Gerald Shaw and a layup from Jamel Johnson before Southern Indiana settled for a 42-25 lead at halftime.
 
In the early going of the second half, the Saints closed to within 49-34 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Max Mischkulnig and Trae Pemberton. The Screaming Eagles pushed their advantage to 21 but Pemberton answered with a layup, and Melvin Turner sank a 3-pointer to keep the Saints within striking distance at the 10:18 mark. However, the Saints were unable to get any closer as USI notched its fourth straight win to improve to 9-1 overall, 2-0 in the GLVC.
 
Provo lead the Saints with 10 points but was the only Maryville player to reach double figures. Toney topped the squad with six rebounds. The Saints struggled from the field and managed just a 33.9 percentage mark. Southern Indiana shot 57.1 percent and was led by Aaron Nelson’s 19 points and 14 rebounds.
 
The Saints (11-4 overall, 1-2 GLVC) are next in action Thursday when McKendree visits Moloney Arena in a conference doubleheader.
