Box Score Shelby Miller hit half of her shots and finished with 18 points but could not prevent the Maryville women's basketball team from dropping its first game of the season, 79-61 at Malone in Canton, Ohio. The Pioneers had a balanced attack with Sydnee Penn leading five players in double figures with 18 points.

Flynn scored a layup on the first possession of the game, but Malone answered with eight straight points. Flynn tallied to snap the run but Malone slowly built up a 16-7 lead.
JoAnn Thompson hit a jumper to spark a Saints run.
Erica Lorton added one free throw, and Miller converted a layup. After an inside bucket by Lorton,
Alex Hillyer tied the game with a hoop at 16-16 midway through the first half. However, Malone answered with a 7-0 burst and took a 38-29 lead at intermission.

Breann Baker scored the first basket of the second half as the Saints pulled to 38-31 but Malone responded with eight straight points. The Saints got as close as 50-40 at the 11:24 mark on a Miller basket but could not get the deficit to single digits to fall short in the Saints first road test of the season.

Miller hit 8-of-16 shots and added four steals. Flynn finished with 10 points, while Lorton added eight rebounds, five on the offensive end, and chipped in seven points. The Saints struggled from 3-point range and managed to hit just 4-of-24 from beyond the arc. Maryville (2-1) continues its two-game Ohio swing with a contest at Walsh Saturday afternoon.
