Toney Scores 21 But Southwest Baptist Hands Saints First Loss

Hot-shooting Southwest Baptist snapped Maryville's three-game winning streak as the Saints fell 87-80 Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. The Bearcats hit 70.4 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game at a 59.6 clip to offset Asa Toney's 21-point performance. The Saints suffered their first loss of the season and slip to 3-1 overall.
 
Trae Pemberton nailed a 3-pointer on the first shot of the game, and Toney added another trey for a quick 6-0 lead for the Saints. SBU finally got on the scoreboard until one free throw by Myles Jerrett built a 9-6 edge for Maryville. The Bearcats scored six straight points and edged ahead 12-9. An Armon Provo 3-pointer tied the game at 12-12 but Southwest Baptist again took the lead. The Bearcats eventually led by five points before a layup by Toney and two free throws pulled the Saints to 27-26. Maryville tied the game on a Pemberton layup to make it 29-all. SBU scored in the final minute and one Toney free throw gave the Bearcats a 36-35 lead at halftime.
 
The Bearcats scored the first six points in the second half before Jerrett powered inside for a layup to trim the deficit to 42-37. SBU held a narrow edge until another 6-0 burst built a 71-62 lead with under nine minutes to play. The Saints answered with seven consecutive points to jump right back into the game. Harrison DuPont hit a jumper, and Pemberton converted three free throws. Provo scored in traffic to bring the Saints to 71-69 with 6:12 to play. However, the Bearcats went on a 9-0 run to take control late.
 
Toney had eight assists to go along with his 21 points. Provo scored 16 points, while Pemberton added 11. Rashad Brown-Peterson led SBU (4-2) with 22 points. The Bearcats only missed eight shots in the second half as they hit 19-of-27 from the field.
 
The Saints return to the road Tuesday as they travel to Arkansas-Monticello for a 7 pm game.
