Trae Pemberton poured in a career-high 23 points to lead Maryville to a 55-47 victory over Brescia in non-conference action Monday night in Moloney Arena. The victory improves the Saints to 20-6, just the second time in program history Maryville has won 20 games in a season.
Brescia held a 12-11 lead before the Saints scored eight straight points to take the lead.
Asa Toney scored inside, and
Derek Deters added a layup. Toney threw down a dunk in transition, and Deters again followed with a bucket for a 19-12 Saints lead. Brescia cut the margin to three, but Toney scored in the final minute of the half for a 27-22 lead at the break.
The Bearcats chipped away at the lead and took a 30-29 edge three minutes into the second half. The Saints took command with 16 straight points to seize the advantage. Pemberton started the run with four free throws and knocked down a 3-pointer. The Saints would add three consecutive triples, one by Myles Jarrett and two from Toney, to take a 45-30 lead with 11 minutes to play. Brescia answered to get the deficit back down to 45-39 midway through the second half. Maryville responded with a 10-0 run to match its biggest lead of the night at 16. Pemberton sank a 3-pointer, and Jamal Johnson scored back-to-back hoops inside. Pemberton closed the run with a corner trey for a 55-39 lead with three minutes to play to post the win.
Pemberton converted six of his nine shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and all eight free throws. Toney added 15 points and four steals, while Johnson chipped in eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Deters handed out a career-high six assists. Jermain Langley led Brescia (8-19) with 15 points and six rebounds.
The Saints are back in action Thursday when they host Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at 7:30 p.m.
