The Maryville softball team won its 2013 debut under new head coach Liz Kelly as the Saints shutout Franklin Pierce 7-0 to open the Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala. The Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the first and five in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.

Shelby Steinkamp opened up the bottom of the first with a single, and she moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Kelsey Kapitzke hit an RBI single to center field and took second on a FPU error. Jennifer Maynez doubled down the left field line for a 2-0 Saints lead.

Maryville starter Julie Jouglard did not give up a hit until the third inning, and she did not allow a runner to reach scoring position until the fifth. Franklin Pierce threatened when it put two runners aboard in the top of the sixth. Kapitzke entered the circle in relief and immediately induced a double play. She retired the last batter with a fly out as the Saints escaped.

Maryville sealed the win in the bottom of the inning. Maynez and Karlie Twisselman both doubled in runs. Danni Wydra lashed an RBI single, and Steinkamp, who had three hits on the day, drove in two more runs to close out the game.  Jouglard recorded the win after striking out four hitters and only giving up four hits in five innings or work. Kapitzke worked two innings to notch the save.
