Asa Toney finished with 27 points to help the Maryville men’s basketball team rally for a 69-66 triumph over William Jewell at Moloney Arena.
Myles Jerrett hit both ends of a one-and-one with six seconds left to seal the victory. The Saints tied the program for wins in a season with their 21st victory first set by the 1978-79 team.
Late in the first half, the Saints led 29-28 until the Cardinals used a 10-3 burst to take a 38-31 advantage at halftime. William Jewell opened the second half with a 3-pointer to build its biggest lead of the day at 41-31. The Saints responded by scoring seven straight points to come right back.
Armon Provo nailed a corner 3-pointer, and
Max Mischkulnig powered inside for a layup. Provo swiped a steal and cruised in for a layup to bring Maryville to 41-38. The Cardinals hit two 3-pointers to rebuild a 50-42 lead five minutes into the half. Mischkulnig converted a layup to spark a 10-0 spurt by the Saints. Toney scored on a short runner and hit a jumper to bring Maryville to 50-48. Two free throws by Toney tied the game, and
Trae Pemberton’s layup pushed the Saints ahead 52-50 midway through the half.
The Cardinals tied the game but Toney answered with a triple. William Jewell trimmed its deficit to 56-54 but the Saints received a hoop from Provo and a Pemberton three-point play built the biggest lead of the day for Maryville at 61-54 at the 6:59 mark. The Cardinals came back with seven straight to tie the game, but Toney hit one free throw and a 3-pointer to for a 65-61 lead. Dillon Deck scored for the Cardinals and later added one free throw to cut the gap to 65-64. Toney again answered for the Saints inside and a three-point lead. Andrew Scofield hit a layup for the Cardinals to close to 67-61 with 50 seconds left to play. The teams traded turnovers before the Saints took possession of the ball with 6.7 seconds remaining. The Cardinals sent Myles Jerrett to the line but the junior forward hit both ends of a one-and-one for a 69-66 lead. The Saints defense forced the Cardinals (11-12, 7-8) to hoist a desperation 3-pointer that missed the mark. The Saints survived 12 3-pointers from William Jewell.
Toney hit 9-of-17 shots from the field en route to his 27 points and added six assists. Pemberton added 16 points and led the team with six rebounds. The Saints improve to 21-7 overall, 10-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
