After opening the 2013 season with two wins, the Maryville softball team suffered two losses in day two of action at the Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala., Saturday afternoon. The Saints fell 13-5 to Truman State and were felled 13-4 by North Alabama. Maryville closes up the tournament Sunday with two more games.
Against Truman State, the Saints took a 2-0 lead, the third straight game Maryville had scored in the first inning. Jennifer Maynez singled to drive in Shelby Steinkamp with the first run. Karlie Twisselman launched an RBI single to put the Saints up 2-0. Truman State answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The Saints loaded the bases twice in the second and Twisselman and Alex Flasch both drew walks to drive in runs to tie the game at 4-4. Truman drove in two runs on a fielder’s choice and a sac fly for a 6-4 run in the second. Maryville got one run back in the third when Kelsey Kapitzke lashed an RBI single to drive in Kaela Bennett. However, Truman State tacked on three runs in the bottom of the inning and added insurance runs later to improve to 4-0 on the season.
For the first time this season, Maryville’s opponent scored the first run of the game as North Alabama struck for two runs in the top of the second. UNA padded its lead with three more scores in the third. The Saints answered when Kapitzke launched a three-run homer to pull Maryville to 5-3. North Alabama hung a crooked number in the fourth. Steinkamp drove in Alex Carr for the fourth Saints run, but UNA held on to improve to 8-0 this year.
Maryville faces West Alabama and host Alabama-Huntsville Sunday to end their season-opening tournament.
