The Maryville women’s basketball team saw a late comeback fall short in a 62-59 defeat to visiting William Jewell Saturday afternoon. Down 11 with four minutes left to play, the Saints had a 3-pointer by
Brittnye McSparron bounce off the rim that would have forced overtime.
After the game was tied 28-28 at halftime, the Saints took the lead on a McSparron layup. After a WJC score,
Samantha Robison drilled a 3-pointer for a 33-30 Maryville lead. The Cardinals edged back ahead and were up 37-35 before reeling off 12 straight points midway through the second half.
Angela Pepowski hit a free throw to end the run. The Cardinals kept the advantage at double digits and still led 56-45 with 4:38 left.
McSparron hit two free throws, and
Rita Flynn scored inside to pull the Saints to 56-49 at the 2:41 mark. Robison converted two at the stripe, and McSparron swished a 3-pointer to bring the Saints to 56-54. The teams traded scores, and Chelsea Meeks made two free throws for a 60-56 Cardinals lead with 16 seconds left. The Saints pushed the ball up the floor, and Robison hit a triple from the top of the key with 9.1 seconds left to bring Maryville to 60-59. Meeks hit two more free throws with 5.2 seconds left to set up the potential game-tying trey for the Saints. The ball was inbounded up the right side of the court, but McSparron’s shot hit the front end and bounced away as the Cardinals escaped with the win.
McSparron tied her career-high with 20 points, and Robison set a career best with 17 points. Meeks and Cassy Nicolay led William Jewell (14-9, 8-7 GLVC) with 14 points apiece. The Saints grabbed a season-high 50 rebounds but could not overcome a cold-shooting effort from the field.
The Saints see their three-game winning streak end and are 14-9 overall, 10-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
