Men's Basketball Sets Program Record for Wins in a Season with 22

The Maryville men’s basketball team set a new program record for wins in a season with 22 after a 68-56 victory at Illinois Springfield. The Saints surpassed the previous mark of 21 wins set by the 1978-79 team. Maryville is now 22-7 overall, 11-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
 
The Saints jumped into the early lead by scoring the first five points of the game. Asa Toney started with a 3-pointer, and Gerald Shaw added a layup for a quick 5-0 edge. Still leading 7-4, the Saints reeled off 10 straight points to power ahead. Max Mischkulnig hit from downtown, and Toney added a free throw to spark the burst. Armon Provo drilled back-to-back 3-pointers as Maryville grabbed a 17-4 lead nine minutes into the game. The Prairie Stars chipped away at the Maryville lead and got as close as 24-18. The Saints rebuilt the lead to 12 points after a Derek Deters 3-pointer and settled for a 33-24 margin at halftime.
 
UIS closed the gap to 36-30 early in the second half before the Saints answered back. Two free throws from Trae #Pemberton and a bucket by Jamel Johnson# restored a double-digit lead. Maryville led 42-34 with 13 minutes to play and went on a 9-0 burst. Provo began the run with a three-point play. Shaw and Provo hit four straight free throws, and a Johnson layup boosted the Saints ahead 51-34. The Prairie Stars made run with a 9-1 streak to trim the gap to 52-43 with seven minutes to play. Johnson’s basket rebuilt a double-digit lead at 54-43. Maryville took a 59-47 margin on Provo’s third triple of the game with 5:45 to play. UIS tried a late rally and gap the deficit down to nine points, but the Saints sealed the wire-to-wire win with five straight points, capped by Myles Jerrett’s dunk in the waning minutes.
 
Provo paced the Saints attack with 14 points, while Johnson scored a season-high 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Pemberton added 11 points, and Jerrett snared a team leading nine rebounds. The Saints hit half of their 46 shots from the field, including 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range. Dylan Sparkman led the Prairie Stars (7-17 overall, 5-11) with a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Saints defense limited UIS to 31.7 percent shooting.
 
Maryville is back in action Saturday when it hosts Quincy in a 3:15 p.m. start.
