The Maryville men’s basketball team was on the short end of a defensive battle against Quincy as the visiting Hawks escaped from Moloney Arena with a 49-46 victory Saturday afternoon. The game was tight throughout and neither team could build a double-digit advantage.
After a first half in which there were six ties and six lead changes, the Saints led 28-26 after 20 minutes.
Armon Provo hit two free throws, and
Jamel Johnson’s layup gave the Saints a 32-26 edge. The Hawks added two free throws but
Asa Toney answered with two layups for a 36-28 margin. After a Quincy bucket, Provo’s 3-pointer was good for the biggest lead of the game 39-30 with 13 minutes to play.
Maryville still led 41-34 after a Johnson runner in the lane, but the Hawks chipped away at the deficit.
Trae Pemberton sank two from the line for a 44-40 with 8:07 remaining in the game but Quincy made a 3-pointer and a wing jumper pushed the Hawks ahead 45-44 with seven minutes to play. The respective defenses took over as neither team scored for almost six minutes. Quincy hit a free throw for a two-point lead in the final minute.
The Hawks had a chance to extend the lead but missed the front end of a one-and-one. However, the visitors tracked down the offensive rebounds and added two more from the stripe for a 48-44 lead with 27 seconds left.
Gerald Shaw drove the lane for a basket to bring the Saints to 48-46. One free throw handed QU a 49-46 lead with 18 ticks left, but the Saints missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer. The Hawks missed two free throws that would have sealed the game with 2.3 seconds left, but a desperation trey missed the mark.
Johnson nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds to pace the Saints. Shaw added 11 points, while Toney finished with 10. Tyler Thompson led Quincy (12-13, 7-10) with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Saints are now 22-8 on the season, 11-6 in the GLVC. They host their final regular-season game of the year Thursday, Feb. 28, as crosstown rival UMSL visits. The game is Senior Night and
Gerald Shaw will be recognized before the contest.
