The Maryville softball team was tripped up by two Florida opponents on the first day of the Saint Leo Challenge. The Saints fell to Florida Southern 6-0 then 4-2 to No. 6 Tampa.

In the first game, Florida Southern (5-9) tallied four unearned runs in the top of the first for all the offense it would need. The Saints were charged with three errors in the frame to aid FSC. The Saints put runners aboard in the second but was unable to push across a run. Florida Southern tacked on two runs in the top of the third. Two Maryville runners reached and Shelby Steinkamp singled to load the bases in the bottom of the inning. However, Maryville was stymied and kept off the scoreboard. The Saints threatened again in the fifth when Danni Wydra singled and moved to second on a wild pitch but was stranded in scoring position.

In the second game, the Saints saw a late rally come up short to the No. 6-ranked team in the country. The Spartans scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead. The Saints earned one run back in the top of the sixth when Karlie Twisselman doubled in Steinkamp to cut the margin to 3-1. Tampa scored in the bottom of the inning before the Saints rallied again. Meredith Brown singled to left and stole second. Alex Flasch drove an RBI single to right center to pull the Saints to 4-2. Maryville brought the game-tying run to the plate but was unable to forge a tie as Tampa (9-1) held on for the win.

The Saints (2-6) are back in action Sunday as they play Barry and host team Saint Leo.
