Kate Childs scored a season-high 18 points and the Maryville women’s basketball team shot a season-best 57.4 percent from the field en route to an emphatic 86-63 win over Quincy. The victory clinches at least a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division and a first-round bye in the GLVC Tournament. The 86 points are the most surrendered by Quincy this season.
The Saints scored the last five points of the first half to grab a 33-26 lead at intermission.
Shelby Miller opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers as the Saints surged ahead 39-26. The Lady Hawks whittled the lead back down to eight but the Saints answered a 13-5 burst. Childs started the run with the first five points, and
Kayla Person tallied the last five for a 52-36 edge. After a Quincy score, the Saints reeled off seven straight points to take control.
Brittany Fish hit one free throw, and
Rita Flynn powered up for a layup.
Samantha Robison capped the run with consecutive layups for a 59-38 lead with nine minutes to play. Quincy never got closer than 18 points, and the Saints grew the lead to as many as 27 to cruise to the victory.
Childs sank 7-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, to tally her 18 points.
Brittnye McSparron hit all nine of her free throw attempts, the second most makes from the line in a perfect game in school history, and finished with 17 points. Flynn had 12 points, and Person finished with 10. The Saints converted 31-of-54 shots from the field, including 17-of-26 (65.4 percent) in the second half. Carly Beebe led Quincy (13-12 overall, 11-6 GLVC) with 14 points off the bench.
The Saints improve to 16-9 overall, 12-5 in the GLVC, the most league wins since joining the conference. Maryville hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the final home game of the season Thursday, Feb. 28.
