Saints Welcome Crosstown Rival UMSL for Senior Day

THIS WEEK: The Maryville men’s basketball team (22-8, 11-6) The Saints close out the regular season Thursday, Feb. 28, when crosstown rival Missouri-St. Louis visits for a 7:30 p.m. game. Lone senior Gerald Shaw will be honored before the game. Maryville is still battling for a top-four finish in the league standings and a first-round bye in the GLVC Tournament.
 
ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: The Tritons are 17-8 overall, 10-7 in the GLVC and have won three straight. UMSL has five players averaging double figures. Joshua McCoy ranks 10th in the GLVC in scoring at 15.2 ppg and adds 4.1 rpg. He has made 48 3-pointers along with 74 assists and 10 steals. Darian Cartharn adds 14.9 ppg. UMSL leads the country in free-throw percentage (80.7 percent), is second in the league in scoring (78.2) and third in 3-pointers made (8.64 per game).
 
THE DEACONESS HOSPITAL GLVC TOURNAMENT
The Saints have clinched a spot in the Deaconess Hospital GLVC Tournament hosted at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., March 7-10. First-round games are scheduled for Sunday, March 3, on campus site. The scene shifts to Evansville for quarterfinal games Thursday, March 7, the semifinals Saturday, March 9, and the finals take place Sunday, March 10.
 
MORE ON MARYVILLE: The Saints have set the single-season record for wins and are 22-8, 11-6 in the GLVC. Asa Toney leads the team with 14.4 ppg and 55 steals and is second in the league with 129 assists. Armon Provo is second on the squad with a 12.2 scoring average, 83 assists and 45 steals. Lone senior Gerald Shaw adds 10.4 ppg. Trae Pemberton chips in 10.0 ppg and ranks fourth the GLVC in 3-point field goal percentage at .477. The Saints are second in the GLVC and 17th in the nation in scoring defense at 61.6 points per game. Head coach Kevin Carroll is in his third year at Maryville and has compiled a 42-41 overall record.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Saints struggled with their shooting and dropped a defensive struggle 49-46 to Quincy Saturday afternoon. Jamel Johnson narrowly missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
