Shelby Miller scored on a breakaway layup at the buzzer to give the Maryville women’s basketball team a thrilling 56-54 victory at Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Thursday in Rolla, Mo. With the Lady Miners holding for the last shot,
Kate Childs came up with a deflection to steal the ball near midcourt. She threw the ball ahead to Miller who ran the ball down, and from a steep angle to the left of the basket, spun the ball in at the buzzer to give the Saints the win.
The Saints scored the first four points of the game when
Abby Duethman and
Brittnye McSparron sank jumpers for a 4-0 lead. Maryville was still up 11-7 before reeling off a 7-0 run. Shelby Miller drilled a 3-pointer from the wing, and Duethman sank a jumper. Childs swipe the ball and cruised in for the layup to build an 18-7 advantage at the 11:25 mark. The Lady Miners chipped away at the deficit the rest of the half as Maryville settled for a 31-30 advantage at intermission.
McSparron scored on the first possession of the second half for a three-point Maryville lead. The Miners took their first lead of the game three minutes into the second half at 35-33 on a long 3-pointer. Childs hit two free throws and a twisting layup underneath the basket to push the Saints back on top at the 13 minute mark. The teams traded the lead six times before a Childs triple handed Maryville a 46-44 lead. The score was tied at 48-48 before two Childs free throws and a long jumper by McSparron built a 52-48 cushion with just over five minutes to play. Childs slipped a screen and slid in a spinning layup for a 54-48 edge with 4:33 remaining. Missouri S&T inched back into the game and eventually forged a tie at 54-all with 46 seconds to go. In the final minute, the Saints took a shot to go ahead, but the Lady Miners tracked down the ball and held for the last shot before Childs came up with the critical steal and fed Miller for the game winner.
Childs scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Saints, while Miller added 16 points. Duethman had 13 rebounds and now is just two boards away from breaking the Maryville career record of 616. Hailee Parks led the Lady Miners with 14 points, and Karli Sample grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds.
The Saints are now 12-8 overall, 8-4 in the GLVC, while the Lady Miners fall to 12-8 overall, 8-4 in the league. Maryville closes out a three-game road swing with a contest at Drury Saturday, Feb. 9.
