Saints Rally Past Drury 54-53; Miller Sets Record With 10 3-Pointers

Senior forward Abby Duethman hit two free throws with three seconds left in the game as the Maryville women’s basketball team rallied for a stunning 54-53 victory at Drury Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Mo. Shelby Miller set a school record with 10 3-pointers and finished with 35 points, the third-highest single game output in school history. The previous record for 3-pointers in a game was seven set by Kristy Frey. In addition, Duethman broke the career rebounding record and now has 628 in her career.
 
Down 52-41 with 4:21 left to play, the Saints outscored the Lady Panthers 13-1 to rally for the win. Kayla Person hit a short jumper, and Duethman added a bucket to ignite the run. Miller then drained her ninth 3-pointer of the game to pull the Saints to within four at 52-48 with 2:09 to go. The Lady Panthers hit one free throw for a 53-48 lead. Miller rained in her 10th triple of the game to cut the gap to 53-51 at the 28-second mark.
 
The Saints put Drury on the line, and after a miss, Maryville took possession with a chance to tie or go ahead. However, the Lady Panthers stole the ball with 4.1 seconds left and were fouled. In the aftermath of the play, Drury was whistled for a technical foul. The Lady Panthers missed two free throws, and Miller hit one of two free throws to bring the Saints to 53-52. Maryville inbounded the ball to Duethman who was fouled with three seconds remaining in the game. The senior calmly drained both free throws for the game-winning points as the Saints won for the second straight outing in dramatic fashion.
 
Miller topped her previous career high of 34 points by one and hit 10-of-13 from 3-point range and 12-of-20 from the field. Duethman hauled down 14 boards to become Maryville’s all-time rebounding leader. Bethanie Funderburk led Drury with 16 points.
 
The Saints win their second straight and improve to 13-8 overall, 9-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Lady Panthers drop to 10-11 overall, 4-9 in the league. Maryville is back in action Thursday, Feb. 14, when it hosts Rockhurst for “Think Pink” night at Moloney Arena.
