Softball Edged in Two Games at Kentucky Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Maryville University softball team was edged by Kentucky Wesleyan in two Great Lakes Valley Conference games Saturday in Owensboro, Ky. The Panthers scratched out a 2-1 win in the first game and recorded a  6-3 triumph in the second.

In the top of the first, the Saints struck first when they drew three straight walks to load the bases. Karlie Twisselman drove in a run with an RBI on a fielder’s choice to score Shelby Steinkamp. Kentucky Wesleyan prevented the Saints from doing more damage to keep the Saints advantage at just one run. KWC drew even with a walk and an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning. The game remained scoreless until the Panthers had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 2-1 win.

The Panthers struck for three runs in the bottom of the second on three hits to take the early lead. KWC built on the team with two more runs on another three-hit inning. The Saints stayed in the game by throwing out two runners on the basepaths. Maryville answered with two runs in the sixth. Steinkamp singled, and Celci Mueller doubled to put runners in scoring position. Kelsey Kaptizke cashed in a two-run double as the Saints cut into the deficit. The Panthers tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Saints made one more push. Steinkamp lofted what would have been a routine fly out, but a KWC error scored a run as the Saints closed to 6-3. However, Maryville was unable to cut any further into the lead as the Panthers held on.

The Saints slide to 3-9 overall, 0-2 in the GLVC. The Panthers improve to 6-11 overall, 4-4 in the conference.
