Box Score 2 The Maryville baseball team swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader over visiting Indianapolis on a cold afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints recorded a 9-6 win in the first game and came back to take the second 7-4. Maryville has now won five straight games and is a perfect 4-0 in the league.
The Saints jumped out to a quick lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. After an Indianapolis error that would have ended the inning,
Bob Miller made the Greyhounds pay as he cleared the bases with a double to stake Maryville to a 4-0 lead. The Saints tacked on two more runs with RBIs from
Mike Wilkinson and
Jared Green for a 6-0 edge.
Green tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when he drove in
Eric Keling and
Colby White with the eventual game-winning hit.
Kaleb Depew lashed an RBI single for what would prove to be insurance runs.
Patrick Jacobs kept the Greyhounds in check and did not allow a run over eight innings of work with five strikeouts to pick up the win for Maryville. Indianapolis pushed across six runs against the Maryville relief staff, but
Scott Pennington closed out the game for the Saints. Both Green and Miller finished the game with three RBIs. The Saints finished the game with 13 hits and the No. 2 through No. 7 hitters all recorded two hits.
The Saints tallied two runs in the bottom of the second when
Tyler Omlid doubled and scored on Green’s RBI single. After taking second base on the play, Green stole third and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Maryville lead. However, Indianapolis answered with six hits in the top of the third and took a 4-2 lead. The Saints came right back and jumped back out in front with three runs. Keling doubled in a run to cut the deficit to one, and Wilkinson’s infield single tied the game at 4-4. Omlid put down a sac bunt that pushed in the game winner.
The Saints sealed the win with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Maryville plated an unearned run in the fourth after a miscue by the Greyhounds. Keling doubled to lead off the fifth, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Wilkinson’s sac fly to finish the scoring.
Matt Staback worked five innings on the mound to record the victory, and
Brett Grempler saved the game by retiring the final three outs of the game. Gall went 3-for-3 in the game for the Saints.
The Saints improve to 5-7 overall and are atop the GLVC West Division at 4-0. Indianapolis dips to 9-7 overall, 1-5 in the league. The teams will close the series with two games Saturday starting at noon.
