Softball Takes a Pair at Quincy 2-0 and 5-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Maryville softball team went on the road and swept Quincy in a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games Saturday afternoon The Saints shut out the Hawks 2-0 in the first and pushed across two runs late in a 5-3 triumph.
 
Game one was scoreless until the sixth inning. Karlie Twisselman tripled with two outs in the frame to start the Saints offense. Kelsey Kapitzke dropped in an RBI single to center field for the only run Maryville starter Julie Jouglard would need. The Saints tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Alex Flasch doubled to left and took third on Danni Wydra’s single. Jennifer Maynez hit an RBI grounder to second as Flasch dashed home with the second run of the game. Jouglard surrendered just three hits and struck out five QU hitters for Maryville’s first shutout victory since its opener against Franklin Pierce.
 
In game two, the Saints manufactured a run in the second frame. Lacy Emrick walked and moved to second on Flasch’s sac bunt. Emrick took third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Quincy took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Maryville answered to tie the game at 2-2 with a score in the fourth. Flasch figured in the score again as she started the sequence with a walk and moved up two bases on back-to-back ground outs. Tara Macias singled through the left side of the Hawks infield to knot up the game. Quincy retook the lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth, but Maryville answered with a run in the top of the fifth. Kapitzke singled, reached second on a grounder and scored on a Quincy error for a 3-3 tie. The Saints took advantage of a crucial QU error in the top of the seventh and Wydra and Flasch both scored. Kapitzke pitched the final five outs to pick up the win for the Saints.
 
Maryville improves to 5-9 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC. The Hawks drop to 9-15 overall, 4-6 in the conference.
