Box Score 2 William Jewell edged the Maryville softball team in a doubleheader played Friday in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals took game one 3-0 and rallied for a 9-8 win in the second tilt The games were originally slated to be played in St. Louis but were moved to WJC due to the winter storm that hit St. Louis earlier in the week.
The Cardinals pushed across the only run they would need in the third inning on an RBI double. The starting pitchers dominated as that was the lone run until the sixth inning. WJC padded its lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-0 lead. The Saints attack was limited to just one hit when
Kelsey Kapitzke singled with two outs in the first inning.
After a low-scoring affair in the first contest, game two turned into a slugfest. The Cardinals tallied four runs in the bottom of the second, and the Saints answered with four in the top of the third.
Celci Mueller doubled and came around to score on a WJC error. After a
Shelby Steinkamp single,
Alex Flasch lashed an RBI single as the Saints drew to 4-2. Maryville put two more aboard after a fielder’s choice and a
Jennifer Maynez single, and
Meredith Brown tied the game with a two-run double.
WJC retook the lead in the bottom of the third, and pushed its margin to 7-4 with a home run in the fifth. The Saints roared back when Flasch hammered out a grand slam for an 8-7 lead in the top of the sixth. William Jewell tied the game in the bottom of the sixth setting up the final-inning drama. After the Saints went down in order, Megan Risetter hit a game-winning homer for the 9-8 win.
The Saints slide to 5-11 overall, 2-4 in the GLVC. The Cardinals improve to 8-9 overall, 3-2 in the league. Maryville is back in action Saturday at Rockhurst for a doubleheader starting at noon.
