Box Score 2 Maryville repeatedly rallied in the second game of a doubleheader at Drury to earn a split on the day and the series Saturday. The Panthers took the first game 3-0 before the Saints scored two runs in the top of the ninth for a thrilling 9-7 win in the series finale.
Drury managed to string together single runs in the second through fourth inning and limited the Saints to just two hits to take the first game.
Jared Green singled in the first inning, and
Nick Little reached on a long single in the third but that would prove to be the extent of Maryville’s offense as DU starter Will Landsheft kept the Saints scoreless for seven innings.
The Saints took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game two.
Kaleb Depew singled and took second on a passed ball.
Mike Wilkinson doubled to left to bring Depew home with the first run. Drury strung together four hits and scored three runs to jump ahead in the bottom of the third. The Saints answered with two runs in their next at-bat. Wilkinson and
Eric Keling had a single and double, and
Nick Stading pounded out a two-run double to square the game at 3-3. Depew singled to put the Saints back ahead 4-3. Colby White singled to load the bases, and Green walked to force in
Nick Little and a 5-3 Maryville lead.
The Panthers batted around in fifth to retake a 6-5 advantage. The Saints responded again in the top of the seventh to force a 6-6 tie. Stading doubled and
Matt Burton came into the game as a pinch runner. Burton took third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball. The game swung again as Drury manufactured a run to build yet another lead at 7-6. Keling started the ninth-inning rally when he was hit by a pitch and took second on a sac bunt by
Kyle Kinyon. Keling moved to third after a ground out, and
Daniel Barnett walked and took second. Little lashed a two-run single to center to push the Saints ahead 8-7. Little came around to score an insurance run for a 9-7 Maryville lead.
Brett Grempler came in to close out the game in the ninth for the save as
Shane Herschelman notched the win.
The Saints up their mark to 8-10 overall, 7-3 in the GLVC. The Panthers are now 16-8, 7-3 in the conference. Maryville is back in action Tuesday, April 2, when cross-town rival Missouri-St. Louis visits for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
