Playing its first home games of the season, the Maryville softball team split a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games against visiting Missouri S&T. The Miners edged the Saints 4-2 in game one, and Maryville bounced back for a 4-3 victory in the second contest.
The Saints took the lead with their first at-bat of the day.
Shelby Steinkamp walked and took second on a sac bunt by
Karlie Twisselman. The move proved to be key as Steinkamp scored on a Lady Miner’s error for a 1-0 lead. Missouri S&T jumped ahead when Kyra Slemp hit a two-run homer to center for a 2-1 Lady Miners lead. Neither team scored until the visitors padded their lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. The Saints got one score back when
Danni Wydra singled and moved into scoring position on a ground out.
Alex Flasch lashed a double to right center as the Saints closed to 4-2. However, Maryville could not cut into the lead as the Lady Miners held on for the win.
In the second game, the Saints jumped ahead on a three-run homer by
Kelsey Kapitzke in the bottom of the third.
Celci Mueller and Steinkamp recorded back-to-back singles to set the table for the senior shortstop. Kapitzke launched a long ball over the fence in left for her second round-tripper of the season and a 3-0 Saints lead. Maryville tallied what would prove to be the game winner in the fifth. Steinkamp reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second base and took third on a passed ball. Flasch took a pitch to right field for a 4-0 lead. The Saints hurt themselves with an error in the top of the sixth which led to three unearned runs by Missouri S&T. Kapitzke moved from shortstop and got the last four outs to save the game for Saints starter
Emily Chapman. Chapman surrendered only four hits in 5-2/3 innings of work to pick up her first win of the season.
The Saints are now 9-19 overall, 6-12 in the GLVC. The Lady Miners stand at 9-16, 8-11 in the league. Maryville returns to action Sunday as it hosts Drury for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
