Hancock Records 10 Ks as Baseball Saints Sweep Rockhurst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Brett Hancock spun a three-hitter in game one against Rockhurst, and the Maryville baseball team held off a late Hawks rally in game two to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. The Saints posted wins by 2-1 and 7-5 at Weber Field.

In the first contest, Hancock dominated with 10 strikeouts and surrendered only three hits in six innings of work. The Hawks scored in the top of the first as they manufactured a run. The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning when Colby White singled, took second on a balk and moved to third on a sac bunt. Mike Wilkinson hit an RBI single to bring White in and tie the game at 1-1. The starting pitchers took over and did not allow a run over the next five innings. Hancock recorded at least one strikeout in the first five innings, including three in the second frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Nick Little singled with two outs and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Kyle Kinyon laced the walk-off single as Little sprinted home with the game-winning run. Brandon Sarkissian, who came on in the top of the seventh, picked up the win in relief.

In game two, the Hawks again scored in their first at-bat before the Saints rallied in the fourth inning. Wilkinson and Jared Green worked back-to-back walks, and Matt Burton tripled the duo in for a 2-1 Maryville lead. Rockhurst tie the game in the fifth, but the Saints retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on Green’s walk with the bases loaded. Maryville went up 4-2 when Andrew Naegeli scored on a Nick Stading RBI single. The Saints took advantage of a crucial Rockhurst error in the seventh as Wilkinson and White both scored on the miscue. Later in the inning, Green scored on a wild pitch to give the Saints a 7-2 advantage. The Hawks cut into the lead and scored three runs in the eighth, but Brett Grempler got the last five outs of the game to notch his seventh save of the season. Tyler Omlid went 6-2/3 innings to pick up the win.

The Saints improve their record to 14-14 overall, and are now 13-7 in the GLVC, the most league wins they have recorded since joining the conference. Rockhurst is 15-15 overall, 10-12 in the conference.
