Strong Pitching Guides Softball to Sweep Over Drury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Led by sterling pitching performances, the Maryville softball team swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday over visiting Drury. The Saints posted a 2-1 win in the opener and took the finale 4-1 for their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Starter Emily Chapman surrendered only six hits and held the Panthers to one run. Drury scored its only run of the game in the top of the third. The Saints took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Saints strung together six straight singles to push ahead. Danni Wydra singled to score Kelsey Kapitzke with the tying run. Tara Macias then plated the eventual game winner as Alex Flasch dashed home for a 2-1 lead. Maryville could have had a bigger advantage but had two runners thrown out at the plate on strong defensive plays by Drury. The Panthers put runners in scoring position in the final three innings but were unable to tie the game. Julie Jouglard pitched the seventh to record her second save of the season.

In the second contest, the Saints took the lead in the bottom of the first as Shelby Steinkamp scored on a double steal for a 1-0 edge. Drury tied the game in the second but Maryville answered in the home half of the second. Jennifer Maynez and Macias recorded back-to-back singles. Celci Mueller singled to right field, and Maynez slid around the tag at home to put the Saints ahead 2-1. Maryville tacked on two insurance runs in the third. Karlie Twisselman walked, stole second and came around to score on a Drury error. Meredith Brown hit a double that landed on the left field line to drive in Flasch with the final run of the game. The three-run margin would prove to be plenty for Jouglard who surrendered just three hits in pitching the complete game.

The Saints improve to 11-19 overall, 8-12 in the GLVC. The Panthers drop to 17-18 overall, 8-13 in the conference. Maryville hosts McKendree Wednesday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
