Alex Flasch smashed a walk-off single right up the middle to score
Karlie Twisselman with the game-winning run in a 2-1 extra-inning win over Illinois Springfield. Despite a three-run homer by
Kelsey Kapitzke, the Saints dropped game two of the doubleheader 11-3 in games that were contested at the UMSL Softball Field.
UIS pushed across a run in the top of the first, but the Saints tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
Meredith Brown doubled to centerfield, and
Jennifer Maynez’s RBI single to left tied the game. The Prairie Stars nearly scored in the top of the fourth but Twisselman threw out a runner at the plate with a strong throw from centerfield. UIS then loaded the bases but Maryville starter
Julie Jouglard fired a strikeout to end the threat. The Saints put runners on the corners with two outs but could not break the deadlock. Twisselman walked to start the eighth inning and aggressively took second on a long fly out to left field. She moved over to third on a wild pitch. Flasch hit a the game-winning single through the middle of the pitching circle for the 2-1 winner. Jouglard gave up just four hits to pick up the win for Maryville.
UIS tallied two runs in the top of the first and scored in four of the first six innings to jump out to a 7-0. In the bottom of the sixth,
Shelby Steinkamp, who went 4-for-4 in game two, singled, and Twisselman followed with a base hit. Kapitzke then launched a towering shot to left center to pull the Saints to 7-3. That would be as close as Maryville would get as the Prairie Stars tacked on insurance runs.
The Saints are back in action Sunday when Quincy comes to campus for two games starting at Noon.
