Saints Offense Held in Check by UMSL Pitching Staff

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Maryville softball team’s bats were held in check by the University of Missouri-St. Louis pitching staff as the Tritons took both ends of a doubleheader at the UMSL Softball Field.

In the first game, UMSL standout freshman pitcher Hannah Perryman was perfect through five innings before Kelsey Barbeau recorded the first hit for the Saints to leadoff the sixth. With one out in the seventh, Karlie Twisselman walked and Alex Flasch doubled to put two Saints in scoring position. However, Maryville was unable to push across a run as it was held to two hits in the game. Saints starter Julie Jouglard kept UMSL off the scoreboard and gave up only two hits through four innings. The Tritons scored four times in the fifth and eased to a 7-0 win.

The Tritons scored the first four runs of game two for all the offense they would need as the Saints attack was limited to three hits by UMSL pitcher Brittni Chapman. Danni Wydra doubled in the second inning as the Saints but was stranded in scoring position. Wydra notched another hit as she led off the fifth with a single but was erased on a fielder’s choice. The Saints finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Shelby Steinkamp reached on an error, and Twisselman doubled down the line in left to drive in the first run for the Saints. UMSL (33-11 overall, 24-4 GLVC) did not give up any more runs and posted a 7-1 triumph.

The Saints fall to 12-24 overall, 9-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Maryville returns to play Saturday as it hosts Rockhurst at Noon for Senior Day. Saints seniors Kelsey Barbeau, Julie Jouglard, Tara Macias and Celci Mueller will be recognized before the doubleheader.
