Box Score 2 After dropping the first game of a Monday doubleheader to Quincy, the Maryville baseball team posted a 1-0 triumph in the final home game of the season. The Hawks took the opener 6-2. The Saints close the season with a four-game series at Illinois Springfield this weekend.
The Hawks manufactured a run in the top of the first, and tacked on three more runs in the top of the third. The Saints answered with a tally in the bottom of the third inning.
Kyle Kinyon singled to left, and
Kaleb Depew doubled to the left center gap to put two runners in scoring position. #Kolby O’Dowd#’s RBI groundout drew the Saints to 4-1. O’Dowd figured in the Saints run in the bottom of the sixth when he singled and swiped second.
Colby White drilled a single back up the middle to score O'Dowd to pull the Saints to 4-2. However, the Hawks iced the game with two runs in the top of the seventh.
In a game two pitching duel, the Saints scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth to post their second shutout of the season. Their first was a 3-0 decision against UMSL April 2. With one out,
Corey Gall doubled and took third on a wild pitch. He came around to score the eventual game winner on a Quincy error.
Eric Keling started on the mound and threw 5-1/3 innings to pick up the win.
Brett Grempler came on in relief in the sixth and was aided by a diving catch by Saints shortstop Gall as Maryville escaped a bases-loaded jam in the frame. Shane Herschelman retired the final six outs of the game to record his first save of the season. The teams combined for just 10 hits in the game.
The Saints are 16-22 overall, 15-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks stand at 25-15 overall, 19-1 in the league.
