Softball Wins Thriller at Drury in 12th Inning; Drury Takes Game One

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Maryville softball team voyaged to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury and played a pair of one-run games. The Panthers edged the Saints 3-2 in the first, while the Saints scored in the top of the 12th inning for a dramatic 4-3 win in the finale.
 
Drury jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and tacked on two more runs in the second for a 3-0 lead. The Saints put two runners aboard in the third but were unable to push across a run. In the top of the sixth inning, Maryville cut into its deficit. Celci Mueller singled to start the rally, and Kelsey Kapitzke later followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Alex Flasch doubled in both runners as the Saints cut the gap to 3-2. The Saints got the game-tying aboard but could not force a tie game as the Panthers held on for the one-run win.
 
In the second game, Drury scored two runs in the bottom of the third but the Saints answered with a run in the fourth when Danni Wydra singled home Flasch to bring the Saints to 2-1. Maryville tied the game in the sixth when Meredith Brown singled down the left field line to score Flasch and force a 2-2 tie. Drury tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth but the Saints rallied again. Jennifer Maynez doubled and moved up a base after a ground out. Twisselman then doubled in the game-tying run at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. The Saints had chances to jump ahead with runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings but the score remained knotted at 3-3. The Panthers had a golden opportunity in the 10th inning, with runners at second and third with one out but the Saints escaped. Maryville nearly scored in the 11th but had a runner thrown out at home plate. Finally, the Saints cashed in with the go-ahead run in the 12th inning. Kapitzke doubled and took third on a sac bunt by Flasch. Wydra delivered the game-winner with a single to center. Julie Jouglard went the distance and picked up the win after allowing only one earned run in 12 innings of work.
 
The Saints are 7-17 overall, 4-10 in the GLVC. Drury moves to 14-13 overall, 4-8 in the league. Maryville plays two games at Missouri S&T Sunday to close out the road trip.
