Shelby Miller hit four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to guide the Maryville women's basketball team to a 74-67 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory at Illinois Springfield. The junior guard salted the game away by hitting seven of eight free throws in the final minute.
Leading 40-38 with 15 minutes to play in the game, the Saints reeled off nine straight points. Alex Hillyer started the run with a layup, and Miller drained a trey for a 45-38 advantage. Hillyer added another hoop inside, and Erica Lorton capped the outburst with a layup for a 49-38 lead. The Prairie Stars cut the gap to 51-45 but Hillyer sank two free throws, and a JoAnn Thompson basket built a double-digit lead at 55-45 with just under nine minutes to play.
A Samantha Robison trey left the lead at 14, and another Miller 3-pointer gave the Saints their biggest lead of the game 65-49 with five minutes to play before UIS made one final run. The Prairie Stars scored 11 straight points but a Flynn layup provided a 67-60 edge. UIS kept putting Miller on the free throw line but she made six straight free throws in the final 30 seconds of the contest as the Saints won their fourth straight game.
Miller hit 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc en route to her 21 points, and she added six assists. Hillyer added 14 points and tied for the team lead with six boards. Flynn finished with 13 points as the Saints improved to 8-4 overall, 1-1 in the league. Megan Bergerud had a game-high 26 points for UIS (4-6, 0-2 GLVC), while Elizabeth Kelly recorded 10 rebounds.
The Saints stay on the road when they play Sunday in Lebanon, Ill., with a contest at McKendree.
