DuPont Free Throws Edge Saints Ahead of Rockhurst

Box Score Harrison DuPont hit two free throws with 23 seconds left to boost Maryville to a 73-72 victory over visiting Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference thriller. The Hawks grabbed the ball after a missed Maryville free throw with 4.8 seconds left in the game but were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
 
With 1:54 to play in the game, DuPont hit one free throw to give Maryville a 71-68 lead. On Rockhurst's next possession, Liam Duffy, who hit 7-of-8 3-pointer on the night, drained a trey from the right win to forge a 71-71 tie. The Saints missed a 3-pointer, and Brandon McCann hit one free throw to give Rockhurst a 72-71 advantage with 45 seconds to play.
 
Maryville looked inside, and DuPont was fouled. His two free throws marked the sixth lead change of the night. McCann took Rockhurst's potential go-ahead jumper but it rattled out. In a scramble for the rebound, the possession arrow gave the Saints the ball. Maryville threw a long outlet pass to DuPont, but he was unable to build onto the lead. After the second miss, the Hawks were scrambling to get a shot off but were unable to do so as the Saints escaped with the win.
 
 Asa Toney had a tremendous all-around game and finished with 20 points, tied his career high with nine assists and pulled down six rebounds. DuPont tallied 17 points and snared a season-best six caroms. Armon Provo hit three 3-pointers and added 14 points. The Saints survived 26 points from McCann and 21 from Liam Duffy as the duo combined to hit 13 3-pointers for Rockhurst (5-12, 1-9). In addition, the Saints committed a season-low five turnovers while hitting 30 free throws on the evening.
 
Maryville improves to 10-7 overall, 4-5 in the GLVC. The Saints host William Jewell Saturday in a 3 p.m. game.
