Provo's Double-Double Boosts Saints Past Trevecca Nazarene 75-68

Behind Armon Provo's first career double-double, the Maryville men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 75-68 win at Trevecca Nazarene. The contest in Nashville, Tenn., is part of the GLVC-GMAC Challenge. Provo finished with 23 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to pace the Saints.

Trailing 15-7, Maryville reeled off a 14-0 run to roar to a 21-15 lead. Trae Pemberton drilled a 3-pointer to start the run, and Josh Montague added a layup to draw Maryville to 15-12. Max Mischkulnig hit two free throws, and two more from the line from Provo gave the Saints a 16-15 cushion. 

Provo scored on a layup for an 18-15 edge. Pemberton hit one free throw, and another inside basket by Provo gave the Saints a 21-15 advantage with six minutes to play in the first half. The Saints defense forced five missed shots by TNU and six turnovers during the run. The Trojans finally snapped their scoring drought before and edged back ahead for a 30-29 lead at halftime.

Montague scored inside to put the Saints back ahead and start a 7-0 run for Maryville to start the second half. After another Montague bucket, Derek Deters rained in a 3-pointer for a 36-30 Saints lead. TNU made one free throw until the Saints scored five straight on a dunk by Montague and a triple by Provo for a 41-31 lead at the 14:40 mark. The Saints held the Trojans without a field goal for more than six minutes.  Back-to-back 3-pointers by Pemberton and Provo pushed the Saints ahead 49-38 eight minutes into the second half.

The Saints again received consecutive 3-pointers by Pemberton and Provo and pulled to a 57-43 advantage at the 9:31 mark of the second half. Evan Booker powered up for a basket in the lane and a 59-43 lead with 8:43 to play, Maryville's largest of the night. The Trojans cut into the Saints lead before Provo hit Montague for an easy transition bucket and a 61-49 advantage.  TNU answered with a 9-2 run and cut the gap down to 63-58.

The Saints were still up 65-60 with 2:06 left before Pemberton hit both ends of a one-and-one for a seven-point edge. The Trojans forced a turnover and scored to cut the gap to 67-63 with just 1:08 remaining. With 40 seconds to play, Provo scored, drew a foul and his 3-point play gave Maryville a 70-63 advantage. The Trojans answered with a 3-pointer to drop the Saints lead to just four with 30.4 ticks to play. Later, Deters went to the free-throw line and hit two free throws for a 72-67 lead. The Trojans made one free throw with 16.1 seconds to play but Provo drained two free throws with 13.4 ticks remaining to seal the win.

The Saints hit 23-of-45 for a 51.1 field goal percentage while holding TNU to just a 33.8 percent mark. Pemberton finished with 17 points, while Montague reached a career high with 14 points.

The Saints close out the weekend with a game Saturday against Lake Superior State which lost 82-65 in the first game of the tournament.
