St. Louis - Despite a double-double by
Asa Toney, the Maryville men's basketball team was on the short end of a 76-70 game against visiting William Jewell Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. Toney finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double since Dec. 17, 2012.

The score was tied at 8-8 before back-to-back 3-pointers by
Armon Provo pushed the Saints ahead 14-8. The Cardinals cut the gap to 19-16 before a basket by Josh Montague and a layup by Toney handed the Saints a 23-16 cushion. WJC slowly cut into the deficit and forced a 29-29 tie at halftime.

William Jewell edged ahead 36-34 early in the second half before a layup by
Myles Jerrett tied the game, and a drive and bucket by Toney put the Saints on top 38-36. WJC scored seven straight points before Maryville tied the game at 45-45 after a jumper by
Jamel Johnson and a wing 3-pointer by
Trae Pemberton with 13 minutes to play.

However, WJC went on to score nine of the next 11 points to take a lead it would not allow Maryville to retake. The Cardinals led by as many as eight before the Saints rallied. Toney completed a three-point sequence, and Provo drilled another 3-pointer to pull Maryville back to within two at 62-60 with eight minutes remaining. The Cardinals settled down and scored six straight. The Saints made a final charge on two free throws and a basket by Toney. Johnson tallied from a tough angle to draw the Saints to 68-66 with 2:17 to go.

WJC made two free throws before Toney hit a jumper in the lane to make it 70-68 with 41 seconds remaining. D'Vante Mosby scored for the Cardinals, and after a Saints offensive foul, Jordan Lewis hit two free throws for a six-point lead. Toney scored in the waning seconds before Lewis sealed the win with two more from the stripe with 4.9 ticks remaining.

Toney hit 9-of-13 shots from the field en route to his 21 points. His 10 rebounds tied a career high. Provo drained six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points.
Darrin Young Jr. handed out a team-best five assists. Jordan Lewis led William Jewell (8-11, 4-7 GLVC) with 15 points, and Clint McCullough recorded 14 points and 10 boards.

The Saints (10-8, 4-6 GLVC) are back in action next Thursday, Feb. 6, when they host nationally-ranked Indianapolis.
