Kirksville, Mo. - Senior guard Asa Toney set the Maryville career assists record with 378 but his efforts were unable to match a hot-shooting host Truman State as the Bulldogs glided past the Saints 76-51. Toney topped the previous assists record of 377 set by Tim Elwell.
Facing an early seven-point deficit, Myles Jerrett hit a 3-pointer. After two Toney free throws, Jerrett converted from in close to tie the game 9-9. Toney hit a jumper as Maryville took its first lead of the game 11-9. Down by one, Melvin Turner converted from beyond the arc, and a Darrin Young Jr. bucket provided a 16-12 lead seven minutes into the contest. Truman charged into the lead on a basis of a 9-0 burst. Jerrett scored to snap the skid until the Bulldogs nailed back-to-back 3-pointers. A score by Turner pulled the Saints to within 30-25 but Truman State scored 11 of the last 13 points of the half for a 41-27 edge at halftime.
Harrison DuPont carried the Saints three minutes into the second half as he scored five straight points as Maryville got as close as 45-34. However, Truman answered with a 9-2 run and stretched its advantage to 56-38 midway through the second half. Trae Pemberton hit a 3-pointer to try and keep the Saints close but Truman pushed its advantage to more than 20 points to close out the contest.
Jerrett hit 5-of-8 shots and led the Saints with 12 points. Toney had nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Mike Carlson led Truman State with 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs shot 60 percent from the field to improve to 19-5 overall, 12-4 in the league.
The Saints slide to 12-12 overall, 6-10 in the GLVC. Maryville plays its final road game of the season Saturday, Feb. 22, as it heads up to face Quincy.
