Quincy, Ill. - In its final regular season road game, the Maryville men's basketball team picked up a 75-58 triumph at Quincy Saturday afternoon in Pepsi Arena. Asa Toney hit 7-of-9 shots from the field and finished with 24 points along with seven rebounds to pace the Saints attack.
The Hawks jumped on top by scoring the first seven points of the game, forcing the Saints to rally. Maryville trailed 18-9 before scoring nine points in a row. Harrison DuPont started the run with a dunk, and Trae Pemberton added a bucket. Melvin Turner drained a 3-pointer, and Toney tied the game at 18-all with two free throws. Quincy regained the edge and moved ahead by six before the Saints charged back with six straight free throws. Toney's layup handed Maryville its first lead of the day at 28-26, and he added two more from the line for a 30-26 lead at halftime.
Maryville still held a four-point margin before a quick 6-0 burst built a double-digit lead. Toney scored on a layup, and DuPont added a jumper. Armon Provo's bucket gave the Saints a 40-30 lead. With 14 minutes to play, Myles Jerrett hit two free throws as the Saints built up a 46-34 advantage.The Hawks inched to as close as 46-40 but a Toney trey ignited a quick 7-1 run. After a QU free throw, Pemberton found the range from deep, and Toney made one free throw for a 53-41 gap. Quincy got as close as 56-46 but Provo and Toney splashed in consecutive 3-pointers to push the Saints up 62-46 with 9:21 to go. Up 66-51, the Saints put the game away with five straight points. Toney completed a three-point play, and a Pemberton jumper provided a 71-51 lead with four minutes remaining.
Toney shot 77.8 percent from the field as well as converting 8-of-9 at the free-throw line and also handed out five assists. Pemberton tied his season high with 18 points and grabbed a season-best eight boards. The Saints shot 52 percent from the field 26-of-50 and finished 17-of-18 (94.4 percent) from the free-throw stripe. Evan McGaughey led Quincy (10-17, 5-12 GLVC) with 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Saints improve to 13-12 overall, 7-10 in the GLVC. Maryville hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday, Feb. 27, in the regular season finale. The game is #1000Saints Day as Maryville is attempting to draw 1,000 fans to the game. The women's game starts at 5:30 p.m., with the men following at 7:30 p.m.
