Box Score 2 Huntsville, Ala. -Â The Maryville softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Charger Chillout being played in Huntsville, Ala., today. The Saints dropped a 5-3 decision to Union but bounced back to win their second game in a 1-0 shutout of Wayne State.
In the first game versus Union, Maryville took the lead in the bottom of the second. Karlie Twisselman singled and stole second. Nicole Taylor had an infield single to put runners on the corners. Meredith Brown's RBI grounder scored Twisselman with the first run of the game. Union scored three runs in the top of the fourth and added two more scores in the fifth. The Saints tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth. Ashley Marks singled, and after Kelsey Kapitzke singled, Marks came around to score on a Union error. With Kapitzke on third, Alex Flash drilled an RBI single up the middle as the Saints closed to 5-3. However, Union got the last two outs of the inning to end the Saints threat. In the seventh, Casey Ward and Shelby Steinkamp both drew walks but the Saints were unable to bring home the game-tying runs.
Against Wayne State, the Saints scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning and made the tally stand up. Steinkamp singled to start the game and moved into scoring position after a sac bunt. Taylor drove in another run for the Saints as she plated Steinkamp with what would prove to be the lone score of the game.
The Saints are now 2-2 on the season and close out the opening tournament with two games Sunday against Delta State and West Alabama.
