Softball Splits Pair to Close Rebel Spring Games in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Winter Haven, Fla. - The Maryville softball squad finished action at the Rebel Spring Games by splitting a pair of games Thursday in Winter Haven, Fla., The Saints beat Ohio Dominican 4-0 but saw Ferris State rally for a 9-2 win.
 
Against ODU, Maryville pitcher Danielle Williams threw five strong innings to pick up the victory, and Nicole Taylor retired the final six outs for the combined team shutout. Shelby Steinkamp went 2-for-3 and had a walk to spark the Saints offense. Kelsey Kapitzke drove in two runs, and Taylor recorded a hit and an RBI.
 
In the final game of the tournament, the Saints jumped to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Danni Wydra in the bottom of the second. In the next inning, Maryville drew a walk and Wydra had another RBI to push across the second tally and build a 2-0 advantage. However, Ferris State doubled in two runs to start a seven-run fifth inning. The Bulldogs tacked on insurance runs in the last two innings. The Saints put two runners aboard in the bottom of the sixth but that would prove to be their final threat.
 
Maryville (3-7) begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play with two games at Illinois Springfield Saturday, March 15, starting at Noon. The Saints will look to host their first home games of the season Monday, March 17, when Lindenwod visits for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
