Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 St. Louis - The Maryville softball team ran into one of the hottest teams in the country as Truman State brought a 14-game winning streak into St. Louis and continued its run with 12-0 and 5-1 victories over the Saints.
Â
In game one, the Bulldogs scored runs in the first three innings and that was more than enough for TSU pitcher Kindra Henze. She did not allow a hit to the Saints until
Jennifer Maynez lashed a single to left field with one out in the fifth inning. With two outs,
Meredith Brown lashed a single to right field. The ball skipped away, and Maynez tried to score on the TSU miscue. However, the Bulldogs had a play at the plate and threw out the runner to end the game. The Saints hurt themselves with fielding errors as six of TSU's runs were unearned.
Â
After three scoreless innings, the Saints jumped on top in game two on a solo home run by
Kelsey Kapitzke in the bottom of the fourth. Maryville starter
Nicole Taylor made the one-run lead stand up until TSU broke into the scoring column in the sixth inning. Cate Simon drove in two runs with a single, and the Bulldogs added a sac fly for a 3-1 lead. The Saints tried to answer in the bottom of the frame.
Sarah Goodman and
Shelby Steinkamp had back-to-back singles to open the inning.
Karlie Twisselman put down a sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position. However, Maryville was unable to tie the game, and Truman State sealed the win with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Â
The Saints slip to 6-10 overall, 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Truman State, which sits just outside the NFCA Top 25, wins its 16thth straight, and stands at 18-2 overall, 10-0 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Sunday as it hosts Quincy for a doubleheader starting at Noon
