Flasch's Eight RBIs Power Sweep Over Quincy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis - Powered by shortstop Alex Flasch's eight RBIs, the Maryville softball team swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader over Quincy. The Saints won game one 8-7 on a sixth inning homer by Karlie Twisselman, and Maryville closed out the visiting Hawks 10-2 in six innings in game two. Flasch went 4-for-6 on the day and drove in four runs in each game.

The Saints were down 1-0 in the bottom of the second but stuck for four runs in the inning. The bases were loaded for Flasch who drove in two runs with a single, and another Maryville run scored as Quincy misplayed the ball to clear the bases. Flasch took third and scored on Sarah Goodman's RBI grounder for a 4-1 lead. The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the third but the Saints got a run back in the home half. Twisselman doubled, took third on a groundout and scored on Danni Wydra's RBI single.

In the fifth, Quincy again tallied a run but the Saints answered with two more in the bottom of the fifth. The Saints loaded the bases and Flasch again delivered with a clutch single to plate two more runs. The Hawks pushed across three runs in the top of the sixth to forge a 7-7 tie on a three-run homer by Alanna Viken. However, that just set up the dramatics for the bottom of the inning. On the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth, Twisselman launched the ball over the fence in left center for an 8-7 lead and the game winner. Nicole Taylor pitched 4-2/3 innings of relief to record the victory.

In the second game, the Hawks pushed across two unearned runs in the top of the first before the Saints scored the final 10 runs. Shelby Steinkamp reached on an error and took second on a Twisselman sac bunt. Taylor doubled down the line in left to get the Saints on the scoreboard. Flasch then cranked a two-run blast to deep center to put the Saints ahead 3-2. The Saints broke the game open in the bottom of the second.

With two outs, Syd Tockman placed two runs with a single. With two runners on, Flash again drove in two runs with a double that landed just inside the line in left. Jennifer Maynez kept the line moving with an RBI single as the Saints sent 11 hitters to the plate. The game remained scoreless until the sixth when the Saints scored a run to end the game early. Tockman laced an RBI single to left to chase home Steinkamp with the game-ending run. Kelsey Kapitzke allowed just the two unearned runs and went the distance to pick up the win in the circle.

The Saints improve to 8-10 overall, 4-2 in the GLVC. The Hawks stand at 12-16 overall, 4-8 in the league.
