Softball Wins Game One Over Rockhurst; Hawks Take Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis - Maryville and Rockhurst split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday as the Saints prevailed in game one 9-7, while the Hawks took game two 6-4. The teams combined to hit six homers on a cold and windy day in St. Louis.

The Saints roared out to an early 4-0 in the bottom of the first. Karlie Twisselman doubled and scored on Syd Tockman's RBI single to center. Alex Flasch and Kelsey Kapitzke both drew back-to-back walks, and Casey Ward delivered an RBI single. With the bases still loaded, Meredith Brown's single scored two more runs. Rockhurst scored an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Saints answered when Flasch's double chased home Shelby Steinkamp for a 5-1 lead. Rockhurst tallied a solo run in the third and two more in the fourth inning to trim Maryville's lead to 5-4.

In the fourth, the Saints stretched their lead back out when Nicole Taylor blasted a three-run homer to left for an 8-4 edge. The Hawks hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fifth, but Ward got one run back with her own blast. Rockhurst tallied one run in the top of the seventh, but the Saints turned a double play to end the game. Taylor drove in three runs, while Ward and Brown both plated two runs in the game.

The Hawks jumped out to the early lead in game two with two runs in the top of the first. Kapitzke, who started the game in the circle for the Saints, helped herself with a solo homer to pull Maryville to within 2-1. Meredith Brown doubled to open the third and later scored on Twisselman's RBI single. Taylor had an RBI grounder to boost the Saints to a 3-2 edge. However, Rockhurst received a three-run homer from Alex Jacobson and tacked on another score for a 6-3 lead. The Saints got one run back in the fifth on a Kapitzke fielder's choice that scored Brown but that would prove to be the last run by either team.

The Saints see their record move to 9-11 overall, 5-3 in the GLVC. The Hawks are now 12-16 overall, 7-7 in the league. Maryville is back in action at home Sunday as William Jewell comes to visit for a pair of games starting at Noon.
