St. Louis – Maryville University could not overcome the big inning and a pair of outstanding pitching performances as the Saints dropped both games of a doubleheader to William Jewell College 5-1 in nine innings and 6-1 in the night cap.

The Cardinals used the long ball to start the scoring in game one as Brittany Madsen took a pitch over the right center field wall to give William Jewell a 1-0 lead after two innings. The Saints had a golden opportunity to score in the third after Sarah Goodman walked to start the inning, then Shelby Steinkamp laced a single into left to runners on first and second with no outs. Syd Tockman earned a walk to load the bases after a groundout to load the bases, but the Saints hit two groundballs for outs to end the inning.

Hayden then scored on an error while Faith Song ended up at second base for William Jewell. Kelsey Morgan then lifted a blast over the center field wall to give William Jewell a 4-0 lead, and they never looked back.
